Gotra as DNA Science: Why Hinduism Ban Same Gotra Marriage?

Gotra in Hinduism

Friends, there are a lot of outdated traditions in Hinduism. We are forgetting them. But if you look at them in detail, then you will see a very deep perspective of our Rishis and Munis. Similarly, there has been a system of Gotra, which has not only kept our descendants safe, but has also eradicated genetic disorders caused by human inbreeding. A system like Gotra we can't find in any other civilisation throughout the history of the world, whose purpose is to address genetic disorders. We get a system is calling as Gens in the Roman Empire, where people made their groups. But that was also a social structure, there was no genetic concern there either.

Gotra is a genetic system

In fact, you will find many such systems in other civilisations, where people made their groups. We call them clans. But they made them so that they could marry each other for genetic purity. Instead of purity, they got stuck in genetic issues. A system like Gotra was developed on the Indian soil,  Today we do not know our own Gotra. We don't even know why we look for the same caste when we get married, but look for a different Gotra. Our Gotra system has been a part of Sanatan Dharma for thousands of years. In this Article, we will understand its science, and not only science, but we will also know how you can know your Gotra.

Gotra as DNA Science: Why Hinduism Ban Same Gotra Marriage?

What is Gotra

Now friends, before understanding how scientific Gotra is, we should understand where the word Gotra came from and what it means. Because when we talk about generations, we have a lot of words in Sanskrit. There is a vansh, a kul, a caste, and there is a Gotra in it. it. But if you look at the word Kul, it is limited to a few generations and families. Gotra has been believed since ancient times, that it has been going on since ancient times. Such a belief has been given to Gotra. Now we will know more about the word Gotra, about its grammar, but there is one more thing to pay attention to, that when we talk about Gotra, it is a paternal system, not a maternal system. That is, a son gets his father's Gotra, not his mother's Gotra. And this is ensured at the time of marriage.

Woman accepts the man's Gotra

When a woman marries a man, then the woman accepts the man's Gotra. This is called Kanyadaan in our marriage tradition. So if someone tells you that we have donated our daughter to someone's family, then it is not like that. Kanyadaan is not the donation of a girl, it is the donation of a girl's Gotra. That is, the girl is donating her Gotra and accepting her husband's Gotra. That is, she enters her husband's Gotra at the time of Kanyadaan. And at this time, the husband and wife's Gotra becomes same. Then their children are born in the same Gotra. Now why does a girl have to do this? Why does a woman have to donate her Gotra? And why does a man have to accept his Gotra? There is a biology behind this, which we will discuss when we understand the science of Gotra.

The characteristics of Gotra

We have understood the characteristics of Gotra, that whenever the word Gotra is used, we understand that it is about a family. Or Gotra is a paternal system that has been going on since ancient times. But what does the word Gotra mean? Where did this come from? If you go to understand this, you will be in a lot of trouble. Because in the ancient times of India, whatever subjects were there, whether it was Ayurveda, Mathematics, Geology, Astrology, Spirituality, everywhere you get to see the word Gotra.

Somewhere it has been taken from the earth, somewhere from the direction, somewhere from the senses. So when there is so much confusion, then we first see its meaning in the grammar. And if you go to the Astadhyay of Maharishi Pandani, he wrote a sutra on Gotra word that अपत्यम् पौत्र प्रभृति गोत्रम् . So when Maharishi Pandani defines Gotra, he says that your immediate son or daughter are not called Gotra. Rather, the sons and daughters ahead of them are going to be. That is, your grandson or granddaughter and their children will make your Gotra.

Meaning of Gotra by Maharishi Panini.

So here Maharishi Panini tells the unlimit edness of the Gotra system. He says that not only our family is Gotra, but for Gotra, at least you have to go to your children and their future children. Then a Gotra is formed. This is from the point of view of the grammar. If we go before Maharishi Panini ji and try to find it in the Vedas, then in the Vedas too, Gotra word comes in many mantras.

There too, linguists have interpreted it in many different ways. But most of what you will see comes in those meanings where a limit is being defined. Like it comes in the meaning of Gaushala. So there too it is being seen that there is a limit, a limit is being made. Gotra word is also taken from it that when a limit of your family is made, when you are separated from others and kept in one family, which has been going on for a long time, it is called Gotra. By the way, if you see the word Go, it is also taken from Gati and Indriyon. And it is also believed that  Gotra means such a system that protects your senses.

Ancinent Indian Beliefs About Gotra.

Now, according to beliefs, it is believed that the Gotra system is born from the Saptarishis. The Saptarishis are believed to be Atri, Kashyap, Vasishtha, Vishwamitra, Gautam Maharishi, Jamdagni and Bhardwaj. And it is believed that this Gotra system was made by these Saptarishis. And it started with the Saptarishis, but today it is seen that there are about types of Gotra among us Now friends, let's move towards its science. There is one more confusion that many people do not understand the difference between Gotra and Jati. They think that Gotra and Jati are one and nowadays more emphasis is given on Jati. In this case, let's understand the difference between Gotra and Jati.

Diffrence between Gotra and Jati (गोत्र और जाति में अंतर)

Friends, if you look at Jati and Gotra, there is a lot of difference based on their principles. We think they are similar because today's Jatis are based on birth. If someone is a Gupta, his son is a Gupta. So, since Jati is also based on birth, Gotra is also based on birth. So, people have started seeing both as similar. But if you go back in time and look at the history of Jati, Jati was a work association.

That is, if many people were doing iron work, then it became a Jati. If many people were doing Kumhar work, then it became a Jati. So, as it was a work, People increase the work among themselves. Also they learn from each other, to make that system stronger, people used to come together and it became a Jati. So, you can see the Jati of badhayi. So, different types of Jatis were formed.

Jati Based on Work

Now, because a father wants his son to learn from him, he used to promote the same Jati or the same work That is, if my father was an iron worker, then I am also an iron worker. So, when this work started going from father to son, it was based on birth. Even today, we see that the Jati of the father becomes the Jati of the son. But if you look at the concept of Jati, it is based on work and business. But Gotra is completely based on birth. If you want to understand the difference between Jati and Gotra, then let me give you an example. Suppose there is a family.

So, in today's time, if a family has sons or sons and daughters, then they can do different jobs. Some can be a businessman, some can be a doctor, some can be an engineer, some can be a shopkeeper. So, if you look at the work association, the Jatis have not remained the same. But the Gotra remains the same. You cannot change the Gotra of the father because it is based on birth. So, since Jatis are based on birth, that's why we see equality between Jati and Gotra. But Jati was originally based on work and Gotra was originally based on birth.

Gotra based on Genetics

So,Gotra is a system that is completely based on your genetics and birth While the Jati system is based on work. The kind of work one was doing, they were meeting such people and marrying such people so that one's business also grow and whatever one have learnt can share with generations. that's why you will see that many types of people are found in the same Gotra. You will find teachers, Brahmins, Kshatriyas. If you go to the system of Varnas, then you will find Shudras, Vaishyas. They will be from the same Gotra.

So, I hope you have understood the difference between Gotra and Jati. Although there is a difference, but since Jati is given more importance in the society today, that is why there is more discussion on jatis and not on gotra.

Let's understand the science behind Gotra. (गोत्र का वैज्ञानिक महत्व )

If you want to understand any social system of Hindus that has been going on since ancient times, then our history books are very useful for that. Whether it is Ramayana or Mahabharata. You will get to know about those systems in detail. If you talk about Mahabharata, then you will get to know about Parashuram's Gotra. He is a Bhrigu Vanshi. His Gotra was Bhrigu. Mahabharata is a big epic where Ved Vyas has detailed all the Vanshavalis and Gotra systems. That's why Mahabharata has hundreds of characters. There are so many characters and their stories that we are not able to understand those characters and make a wrong assumption.

Let's understand the scientific basis of Gotra.

Actually, there are pairs of chromosomes in each cell of the human body. And in each pair, one chromosome comes from your mother and the other chromosome comes from your father. Similarly, there are pairs, that is, there are a total of  chromosomes in each cell of you. Now, what are chromosomes? Chromosomes are genes that store our genetic information.

How will our body look like? How will our face look like? How will our hair look like? What will be the color of our eyes? All these instructions are stored in them, which is how our body is made. Now, friends, if you look at these pairs of chromosomes, then there are some special things in them. For example, if you look at these pairs, then the first pairs are the same. They are called autosomes. That is, if a X-type chromosome comes from the mother, then the father will also be called an X-type. So all pairs are XX-type. But if you go to the twenty 3rd pair, then there can be a change.

The twenty 3rd pair is called a sex chromosome

The twenty  3rd pair is called a sex chromosome because it decides the sex  of your body. Now, it can be XX or XY. We are talking about X and Y. So keep in mind that the Y chromosome is male-specific and the X chromosome is female-specific. That is, the last pair, the twenty 3rd pair, if there is an X and an X in it, if there is an X from the mother and an X from the father, then a daughter is born. But if there is an X from the mother and a Y from the father, then a son is born as XY.

The Y chromosome is in the male generation

So you can see that in the long run, the Y chromosome is in the male generation. That is, the father keeps himself safe in the son and grandson. The father gives it to the son and the son gives it to his son. But the X chromosome is not unique. It does not only go ahead in the female generation that it goes from mother to daughter and then from daughter to daughter. It comes from both the mother and the father. That's why it doesn't have much uniqueness. That's why if we keep connecting a girl's vanshavali to her mother, then after a while, we will start forgetting things.

We will lose track. Because the X chromosome comes from both the mother and the father. And slowly, this tree will grow so big that it will become complex to track things. But if we look at a boy and start tracking vanshavali from him, then it is easy. Because the Y chromosome in him will be in his father. The Y chromosome in his father will be in his father. So we can see that the Y chromosome does not come from outside. They are coming from the same side. So it is easy for us to track.

The Y chromosome becomes a unique signature.

So the Y chromosome becomes a unique signature. That's why our clan system had a scientific basis that we should make it a patriarchal clan. We should make it a male clan, not a female clan. So this has been a scientific reason, not a patriarchy. Now friends, it is easy to track the Y chromosome. But there is also a big problem with the Y chromosome. That's why marry is forbidding in the same clan. And it is said that the husband and wife should be from different gotra.

Why not marry in the same Gotra and Density?  (एक ही गोत्र में विवाह क्यों नहीं ?)

Now friends, we understood that there are pairs of chromosomes in each cell of our human body. They have genetic information that how our color, shape, etc. will be, they decide. But sometimes there can be some error in them. These errors are called mutations. Now friends, we learned that the first pairs are identical. Mothers have X, fathers have X. But the last pair can be XX, XY. If it is XX, it is a girl, a girl. And if it is XY, it is a boy. Now friends, I talked about mutations that our genes have genetic errors. So these errors, these mutations are in almost all of our bodies. But they don't cause us a big problem because in our cells, in these chromosomes, there is a mechanism of self-repairing.

Let's understand that mechanism.

These first pairs, suppose in one pair the X from the mother, the chromosome, there is some error in it. So the X from the father, if it is correct, then they recombine with each other and remove the error and restore the information. So this is a mechanism of staying safe from mutations. If there is an error in one chromosome, then its partner chromosome, it recombines with it and restores its information. And removes the error. Now friends, if there is such a situation that there is some error in the X from the mother, and the X from the father also has the same error, then the same error cannot be rectified. And you think, when can this case happen?

When the mother and father are coming from the same family

When the mother and father are coming from the same family. Because this will only happen when the fault in the mother, she must have had that fault in her family, that's why she has genetic fault or genetic errors. And if there is a person in the same family with whom she marries, then that person can also have that error, that genetic disorder. That's why when they get married and come together, then when they get their XX, and both have the same error, then it is not rectified.

That genetic disorder is formed in the child. That's why it is said that the same family, same family and same family should not get married. And if you talk about the last pair, where there can be XX and XY, then in the case of XY, this problem increases even more. Because if you see, what happens in the case of XX, if there is an error in one, then the other can rectify it. But what will happen in XY, that if there is an error in Y, then Y does not have Y, with which it can rectify itself.

Y depends on itself to rectify itself.

So Y depends on itself to rectify itself. And in evolution it has saw that Y is not the same as it was. There have been so many mutations, so many errors, that Y has left its things. Because it has no other means to restore information. So all the information that has been lost, it has been left with time. So Y has left about % of the genes, deleted them. Only -% of the genes are left.

Scientists have even calculated that in the future it may be possible that we may not even be males. Because we are made of males X and Y. And there have been such problems in Y from time to time. And Y has not received any support because there is no Y in its pair. So Y has to depend on itself. Because of which a lot of information that has been lost has been removed. And now very little is left. That is, Y is very vulnerable for mutation. And this mutation definitely goes away if there is a child from that Y. And if it is a boy, then it definitely goes to that boy.

If there is a disturbance in someone's Y.

So if there is a disturbance in someone's Y and there is a girl from the same family who marries him, then if a boy is born, then there must be some disturbance in it. Because Y as it is moves forward. And to rectify itself, it does not have any other copy.

The Habsburg jaw.

A prime example of this is Egyptian Tutankhamen.Whose father married his own daughter. And Tutankhamen was born. And Tutankhamen's backbone was completely crooked. Similarly, there was a dynasty called Habsburg in Spain who married each other. They considered themselves genetically pure. And by marrying each other, their children's jaws gradually became crooked. They then had trouble eating and speaking. This disease was later called the Habsburg jaw.

The system of Gotra was made.

So in our civilization, this thing was addressed earlier. And the system of Gotra was made. That you do not marry in your own family. Due to which such diseases can occur There is even a shloka in Manusmriti. In which it is said that atleast the difference should be of generations. This has been said. If we follow this, do not marry in our Gotra. Or when we see while getting married, that the woman or man, there is a difference of many generations between them.

Then genetic diversity is formed from it. Genetic diversity is a very important part of evolution. If genetic diversity is not formed, then the children are spoiled. And this is not only in humans, but also in crops. That's why governments tell us, that we should change the crops. So that genetic diversity remains. And our farming is fruitful. So friends, you can see, what is the scientific basis of Gotra. And why this important system, has remained in our Sanatan Dharma. Now friends, there will be many people among you and me, who do not know about their Gotra. So let's understand how to know Gotra.

How to find out one's gotra? अपना गोत्र किस प्रकार ज्ञात किया जाए?

So friends, if you do not know about your Gotra, then first of all, ask your elders. Or ask your grandparents, your uncle, aunt, uncle. Ask them. If they also do not know, and you live in the city, then go to your village, or try to find out from generational place. Especially try to find out from them, who are of your caste. Often it has been seen that if your caste is same, then the Gotra is also the same. If you do not even know there, then ask your elders. If you do not even know there, then ask your family.

That for Karma Sanskar, or Agni Sanskar, the family does not go to any special place. Or at any special place, Pind Daan has not been done. If there is any special place, then you can also go there and find out. There is Pothi. And in that you may know about your Gotra. As you may know, that in Gaya, often Pind is given to the ancestors.

Data recording of density to know Gotra.

So often those of us who are very educated, they think that these are all miraculous things, or superstitions. But you may not know, that this is such a big database. Why is the Pind of ancestors happening in Gaya only? Because in Gaya only, all the people of Sanatan Dharma, if we do Pind Daan there, then our data is also secured. So by going there, you can know about your family, about your -generations. That is why this Pind Daan is arranged at some place, so that there is data about everyone. So Gotra system is a great example of data management. Even there, for hundreds of years, generation after generation, the knowledge of each family is kept safe in the documents. So maybe you can find out about your Gotra there too.

There is no Shastra  or Vedic method.

Apart from all this, there is no Shastra or Vedic method. But if you get failure from everywhere, you don't know about your Gotra, then there is such a system where you can register yourself in a Gotra. For this, you have to take diksha from a Guru. Then you can enter the Gotra of that Guru.So friends, these were some methods that I wanted to tell you. With this, you will also be able to know about your Gotra. Along with this, if you have a family priest, who gets you married, then maybe he also knows. So you can also find out from him.

So friends, you have seen that the Gotra tradition is not just a social and cultural tradition. It has also been a scientific tradition. In today's time, we see that many things seem outdated to us. We feel that all these things are of the old times and they have no relevance today. But when you look at it in depth, you will also understandthe special knowledge behind it.

Our goal is to understand these traditions.

So friends, we should understand these traditions in depth. Our goal is to understand these traditions. Keep the information you get safe for your future generation. And friends, if you have any thoughts, then tell us in the comment section. And if you want to support us.  Not only will we get support from this, but you will also get access to a lot of exclusive things. So welcome to the Pure Hindu Life community. You get a lot of  Knowledge on spirituality, devotion, and ancient scriptures of Sanatan Dharma from this web site.

Conclusion.

Same-caste marriage is prohibited in Hinduism because of the depth of cultural, scientific, and religious perspectives. Hindu society emphasizes ancient traditions and purity of lineage. Modern science sheds light on the hereditary benefits of surviving inbreeding. By understanding Hindu traditions from this perspective, individuals can make their own decisions, which will give priority to their lineage and health.
